In this section you aren’t going towon’t find reviews of the latest hit movie, book, album, or so forth. What you are going to find are random regular impressions of whatever I happen to be excited about at the moment. In other words, one day you might find my thoughts on a new novel, a jazz recording from 1929, or Humanoids from the Deep because I caught it on Netflix last night.

The Best Movies Released Before 1970

A group of us tried to come up with a short list of exemplary pre-1970 movies. The goal was a maximum of 20. I couldn’t winnow mine down below 25, and even making that number was painful. They are presented here in no particular order. And before you start smacking me around for omitting one […]

The Set-Up The history of sports broadcasting has been a steady stream of the unremarkable, which, thankfully, has been punctuated by eruptions of the brilliant, the virtuosic, and the sublimely idiosyncratic—broadcasters who seem to effortlessly confer maturity, dignity, sagacity, and emotion upon sporting events of every kind. I’m talking about guys like Vin Scully, Red […]

Off and on since I’ve been doing this blog, people have contacted me wanting to know what I’m reading, and do I have any recommendations for them. I resisted for a time, thinking that foisting my opinions about books on my readers would be somewhat arrogant. Then I reminded myself that my opinions about books […]

To Be or Wanna Be

I don’t often write book reviews, which is not to say I do not have opinions about books. I have opinions about pretty much everything. Except light switches. I have no sentiments one way or the other on light switches. But anyway. For the most part I don’t write book reviews because I don’t feel […]
